Difference between the metal wires and Invisalign Braces

Invisalign braces are as effective as traditional metal braces but better in terms of aesthetics, convenience, and comfort. Some dentists recommend this because they correct your teeth’s alignment faster. To further discover why Invisalign braces can be better alternatives to metal braces, you must understand the differences between the two.

  • Traditional braces use metal brackets glued to teeth and are linked together by wires and coloured rubber bands. On the other hand, Invisalign braces are clear aligner trays made of BPA-free plastic. Like metal braces, they are custom-fitted to your teeth accordingly.
  • Traditional braces are permanently fitted to your teeth for two years—sometimes longer, depending on how much correction your teeth need. Invisalign braces are removable and must be worn for at least 22 hours a day for a maximum of 18 months. The treatment time also varies from patient to patient.
  • Metal braces are painful and cause discomfort because of the brackets. While the slow movement or straightening of teeth is bearable, the rubbing of metal and wires against the flesh in the mouth can be irritating and may result in ulcers and even minor bleeding. Due to this, patients are prescribed to apply gum gels or use medicated mouth rinses to minimise the pain. This is not a major problem with Invisalign braces.
  • Your dentist must adjust your metal braces monthly to correct your teeth alignment. Meanwhile, you can replace your own trays with new ones every 2 to 6 weeks depending on your program. All the trays will be given to you beforehand.

Metal braces must be brushed and flossed thoroughly to keep food from getting stuck in your brackets. Likewise, Invisalign trays must be rinsed carefully every day. Between the two, Invisalign Braces makes maintaining proper oral hygiene easier and more convenient.

Invisalign corrects most types of misalignment. However, not everyone can be a candidate for this treatment option. Make sure to consult a qualified and certified dentist with a proven reputation in your area to see if Invisalign is right for you.
