Dental Health Week 2021: Keep Your Smile for Life | Dr Sheetal Sachdeva B.D.S. (Dental Surgeon)

Did you know that Dental Health Week 2021 is coming up from the 2nd to the 8th of August?

As your Wantirna South dentist, we’re happy to provide you with the perfect oral health solution for your needs, as well as helping you better understand the process along the way.

Tempting as it is to think that people are practising good oral hygiene, the reality is that the oral health of many Australians is not close to where it should be.

  • 75% of adults rarely or never floss or clean between their teeth.
  • 1 out of 5 adults brushes only once per day.
  • 39% of parents report their children drink 2-5 softdrinks per week.
  • 2 out of 3 adults usually visit their dentist for a problem than a dental check-up.
  • 47% of adults consume too much added sugar.

#1 Brush teeth at least twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste

Brushing the teeth once daily is a must but brushing twice daily is more beneficial in order to prevent bacteria; for example, if we brush our teeth in the morning and don’t brush it again thru out the day, bacteria will build up, damaging the enamel of your tooth and weaken gums and roots, allowing decaying to occur, if bad bacteria occurs it can contribute to foul breath.

#2 Clean between your teeth at least once a day with floss or interdental brushes

When flossing, you loosen food particles and plaque around your teeth. The brushing action then helps remove the plaque and food particles that you’ve removed from your teeth and gumline.

#3 Maintain a healthy, balanced diet and limit added sugar consumption

Everything you eat and drink can affect the health of your teeth and gums, particularly whether you develop tooth decay, a diet-related disease that is caused when the sugars in the food and drinks you eat are taken up by bacteria; these, in turn, produce the acids that can attack the tooth enamel.

#4 Visit your Wantirna South dentist for check-ups and preventive dental care

A dental check-up is important as they help keep your teeth and gums healthy. You should have a regular dental visit at least every six months or as recommended by your dental professional.
